Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Severe Toothache

Persistent, throbbing pain that gets worse when biting or applying pressure is a key sign of pulp infection needing root canal therapy.

Temperature Sensitivity

Lingering pain after eating hot or cold foods — lasting more than a few seconds — may indicate inflamed or infected dental pulp.

Darkened Tooth

Tooth discolouration (grey or dark yellow) can signal internal tissue breakdown, a sign the pulp is dying or dead inside.

Gum Pimple or Swelling

A pimple-like bump on the gum (fistula) or facial swelling around the tooth may indicate an abscess requiring urgent root canal treatment.

Deep Decay

When a cavity or crack has progressed deep into the tooth and reached the pulp chamber, root canal treatment is the only way to save the tooth.

Cracked or Chipped Tooth

A fracture that extends into the root of the tooth can expose the pulp to bacteria, leading to infection that requires root canal therapy.

Your Root Canal Treatment in 4 Steps

01
Diagnosis & X-Ray

Our dentist takes a digital X-ray to assess the infection and determine the number of canals. Local anaesthesia is administered so you feel nothing.

02
Pulp Removal

A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth. The infected pulp is carefully removed using precision instruments under complete numbing.

03
Canal Cleaning & Shaping

The root canals are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and shaped to receive the filling material. Antimicrobial irrigants eliminate all bacteria.

04
Sealing & Crown

The canals are filled with biocompatible gutta-percha. A crown is placed on top to restore full strength and appearance to your natural tooth.

Root Canal FAQs

Is root canal treatment painful? +
Modern root canal treatment is virtually painless. We use effective local anaesthesia so you feel only pressure, not pain. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the procedure is. Mild soreness for 2–3 days afterwards is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does a root canal take? +
Most root canals are completed in one or two visits. A single-canal tooth can take 45–90 minutes. Multi-canal molars may require a second appointment. We will give you a clear estimate at your consultation.
What happens if I don’t get a root canal? +
Without treatment, the infection will spread to the jawbone and surrounding teeth, potentially causing a serious abscess. The tooth will eventually need extraction. Root canal treatment saves the natural tooth and prevents these complications.
How long will a root canal treated tooth last? +
With a proper crown placed on top and good oral hygiene, a root canal treated tooth can last a lifetime. It is one of the most effective long-term solutions for saving an infected tooth.
